About us and our commitment to sustainability

We are nature, we are the environment!

Sustainable and responsible travel is at the core of who we are, its in our DNA. From the very beginning, we’ve been committed to respecting and protecting the environment. We work hand-in-hand with local communities, hotels, and businesses to create authentic, meaningful experiences while supporting local economy and the people who make each destination special. Out of respect for animal welfare, we don’t involve animals in our trips.

Travelling Iceland is committed to nature conservation, both locally and globally. For every trip booked, we plant a tree to help offset carbon emissions and promote a greener future. Through our partnership with Plant a Tree in Iceland, your journey actively supports the restoration of Iceland’s fragile ecosystems, aids in the fight against climate change, encourages the reforestation of native species, and helps combat soil erosion.

In January 2017, Travelling Iceland signed a declaration on sustainable and responsible tourism.

Travelling Iceland is in the process of obtaining Travelife certification.

Travelling Iceland’s founder is Helga Bára, a geologist with a doctorate in micropaleontology, with special emphasis on past climatic and oceanic changes. Helga Bára co-founded Plastic-Free September initiative, which encourages minimizing plastic use and supporting recycling efforts. She also served as a project assistant for the UN’s Faith for Nature: Multi-Faith Action initiative. Inspired to take collective action to protect our shared planet. Enthusiastic about nature and the environment and knowledgeable of her country, Helga Bára and her great team of experts, will discover with you all the gems of the North, with focus on responsible travel.

I pledge to be a responsible tourist

When I explore new places, I will leave them as I found them

I will take photos to die for, without dying for them

I will follow the road into the unknown, but never venture off the road

And I will only park where I am supposed to

When I sleep out under the stars, I'll stay within a campsite

And when nature calls, I won't answer the call on nature

I will be prepared for all weathers, all possibilities and all adventures

The Icelandic Pledge

Inspired by Iceland now offers tourists to take a pledge to travel responsibly when visiting the country. ‘The Icelandic Pledge’ is an online agreement where tourists can sign, and promise to respect nature while travelling in Iceland.

Take Action Now

Open net salmon farming is driving wild salmon to extinction, polluting Iclands´s pristine coasts and mistreating the farmed animals. We call on the Iclelandic government to shop leadership in Europe and ban open net salmon farms.
